that one time my dream to dance with ABT came true

This past weekend, the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) was on tour in Minneapolis! The last time they were in town was seven years ago, so when I found out they were coming, I bought tickets right away. When I was a teenager, it was my dream to be a professional ballet dancer, and ABT was pretty much on top of the list of companies that I had false high hopes of joining.

A week before the big show, one of my friends told me that ABT was holding auditions for supers (before this I did not know that it meant extras) to perform with them. You cannot imagine how I excited I was when I heard about this! The audition was mainly based on if they could fit you into any of the costumes, and this was a hurdle for me because I'm pretty petite. I decided to go anyway (how could I not try?), and after trudging through a pretty heavy snowfall for the audition, I somehow managed to get a part!!!

Side note: See those names on the dressing room photo above? Stella Abrera (she was an amazing Myrtha in Giselle), Misty Copeland, Yuriko Kajiya, Sarah Lane (Natalie Portman's dance double in Black Swan)... Can't believe I got to be backstage with them *insert dreamy sigh*

ABT's tour coincided with the grand reopening of the Northrop Auditorium, which was the main reason why they were here performing in the first place. I was extra excited because they were performing Giselle - my most favorite ballet of all time that I've always wanted to watch live. So not only did I get to watch ABT perform Giselle, I also got to explore the newly renovated Northrop auditorium. The theatre is huge, so I felt totally adventurous poking around backstage, the dressing rooms, practice studios, stage wings, balcony areas... It was pretty cool.

Yep, the role I played was royal dog walker. Go ahead and laugh :). The dogs in the show were Borzois or Russian Wolfhounds, and as you can see, it was more like my dog was walking me. Typical.

The highlight of my weekend with ABT, though, was meeting Sascha Radetsky (pictured above on the right). Because he did not perform in any of the shows (at least not that I was aware of), I did not think he would be touring with the company. In case you don't know, he was one of the leads in one of my favorite movies - Center Stage. If you love dance, watch this movie!

So here's how it happened: after the last show, I saw a bunch of young teenage girls hanging around the buses that were taking the company to the airport. I decided to go check it out to see if there were any dancers boarding the bus that were familiar to me. I was just standing around, and suddenly, this well-built guy with sunglasses on starts walking toward the bus, and I was like, "wait.. is that... could that be who I think it is?" My friend A was there with me and was laughing at how I was totally 'fangirl-ing' in that moment. C'mon, if you met Sascha Radetsky, wouldn't you ask for a photo with him and gush about how much you love love loveee Center Stage and think his dancing is amazing?!

I still can't believe that I got to be on stage with ABT. It was definitely the experience of a lifetime.

Also, please excuse my overuse of superlatives in this post.
