chinese lunar new year

Happy Chinese New Year or Spring Festival! This past weekend, I celebrated the new year according to the Chinese Lunar calendar. As per usual, any holiday I celebrate always involves a lot of food. Even though my home is now in the U.S., I feel really blessed to have my family and, of course, lots of friends here to share the holiday with.

One of my friends visited Malaysia over winter break and brought back with her a Malaysian-Singaporean tossed salad dish called 'lou sang' (pictured above). I haven't had this in a long time so it was a real treat! It has lots of colorful pickled vegetables, crackers, sesame seeds, crushed peanuts, and sometimes sashimi. To top it all off, you toss everything with a plum sauce dressing. My favorite part about eating this dish is that everybody gets to toss the salad together. You raise your chopsticks as high as you can, and this is done while saying many well wishes to your friends and family. Yes, it's as messy as it sounds, but so much fun!

Being away from home, you are often pushed to learn how to cook whatever you could once easily buy. Lucky for me, my friends can cook! Even my American friends have mastered a good number of Asian dishes, one of which made his (now famous) chicken curry. So good. The pictures above show less than a quarter of the food we had. I'll have to get better pictures in the future. Still dreaming of those silky smooth egg tarts...

Clockwise from top left: 'lou sang,' fried crab stick rolls, chilled tapioca pearls with sweet coconut and melon dessert soup (made by me!), egg tarts.

I also went to a Chinese New Year party, and what party would be complete without a photo booth? As an Asian, I of course had to do what Asians supposedly do best - have lots and lots of pictures taken of myself! Making funny faces and playing around with props is always fun.

At the end of it all, I was just reminded of how blessed I am to have so many great friends to share good times with.

Happy Thursday, it's almost the weekend!
